Discover the Island of São Vicente one of the Barlavento islands of Cape Verde off the west African coast. It is located to the north-west of the Cape Verde archipelago between the islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia, with the Canal de São Vicente separating it from Santo Antão.
The interior of the island has a dramatic mountainous terrain, and the coastal areas has some fantastic stretches of golden sandy beach, windswept and often deserted.
The island is a "mecca" for kite surfers and wind surfers.
São Vicente is the most cultural of the islands with a rich tradition of music and art. The town of Mindelo lies between mountains and the ocean is the largest most cultural and picturesque town in Cape Verde, and capital of São Vicente, classified as one of the most beautiful in the world by Unesco.
The island, of volcanic origin, is fairly flat. Its highest point is Monte Verde located in the northeast-central part with an altitude of 725 m. Although very eroded, some craters still remain, in particular near the bay of Mindelo. Other mountains include Monte Cara and Topona. A small islet, Ilheu dos Passaros, is less than one nautical mile off the coast north of Porto Grande Bay off Mindelo, the island being one of five that have surrounding islets.
Until the mid-20th century, trees were scarce in the island, and most of the island remains deforested. Most of the wide valleys and smaller dales have become forested, particularly in the middle of the island.
